Ironwood forests were prevalent through the deep canyons and riparian areas of the Los Angeles Basin but declined as the climate shifted, leaving isolated ironwood forests in the Channel Islands. Arlington Garden's microclimate allows us to plant these columnar trees ideally adapted for narrow spaces. Associated plants include numerous native ferns, succulents, and vines. This plant community does well in partially shaded courtyards or underneath oaks.
